Building Dreams with Tabitha Cambodia

Building Dreams with Tabitha Cambodia

The Specialty team from the Singapore office recently went to Cambodia to build houses for needy families.  It was a fantastic experience for all.  We really enjoyed meeting the team at Tabita Cambodia in Phnom Pehn and spending time with the new home-owners in their village.

HISTORY OF VOLUNTEERS AND HOUSEBUILDING:
In early 1995, Andy Payne, a teacher with United World College in Singapore, came to Cambodia and learned about Tabitha. Andy wanted his students to come and learn about poverty through a volunteer experience.

Tabitha Cambodia responded to this request by developing the house building project. The concept was to provide a learning experience that taught the recent history of Cambodia and to combine this learning with a practical experience of the impact on many people here. This was to be done through building a small home for a family in our project.

From 1995 when the first team arrived until 2003 – the number of houses built was deeply affected by various coup attempts within Cambodia and concern over health issues such as SARS and the bird flu. Since 2003, the number of volunteers and the house being built have increased from 300 per year to a current average of 1000 plus per year.
